Let There Be Charging

Using public lamp posts to charge EVs

Hello and welcome to the Strawman, your daily dose of climate news.

Today we’re getting in to creative solutions to tackle the EV charging challenge. Let’s get plugged in.

Coulombs on the Curbside

We all know that cars are massive pollutants but switching to EVs ain’t all that simple.

There’s large up front cost, concerns about distance you can travel, and of course the infamous challenge of finding a fast charger that actually works.

It’s clear that investment in charging infrastructure is much needed.

This week Voltpost announced they’ve raised $3.6M for their curbside charging solutions.

So how does it work?

  1. Work with governments to find suitable public lamposts

  2. Retrofit Voltpost to share the same electric source

  3. ???

  4. Profit

In other words, Voltpost is finding existing electrical sources and ensuring that you can use them to reliably charge your EV. Pretty smart.

This approach attempts to tackle some of the biggest challenges in the EV space. By using existing infrastructure in residential areas, customers can charge while at home and much more cost effectively.

Voltpost is not alone in this approach, Ubitricity has 7,000 locations like this in the UK and was acquired by Shell. Let’s not comment on that acquisition…

Getting people to switch to electric vehicles is a complicated equation. It needs to make sense financial, practically, and from an environmental perspective - Voltpost and others like it are looking to take these challenges head on.

‘Til next time.
