Turning up the heat
Who let them cook?
Welcome back to the Strawman, the daily climate newsletter that’s hotter than a jalapeño in a sauna - we get you hot under the collar with the knowledge bombs we be dropping.
Chances are it’s been feeling warmer than usual over the past few days - don’t get me wrong, there are still places enjoying the summer snow, but a lot of us have had to turn the A/Cs on to cool down. Today, we’re looking at why this is the case.
Let’s dive in.
Cooking records
The Earth’s Thermostat is all over the place - and climate change has its fingerprints all over it. This Monday was the hottest day ever since records began in 1979.
You think things would come down after such a record-breaking day right? Nah.
Every day from Monday to Thursday got warmer and warmer, finally starting to get a little bit cooler on Friday.
It’s like each day looked at the previous one and was like “nah, hold my beer, this record’s mine”.
El Niño is coming for the heavyweight title
Part of the reason temperatures are hitting such highs is because of El Niño, the temperature phenomena we dived into back in May announced its arrival in June.
El Niño 1 - World Temperatures 0
If the name sounds like a wrestling champ to you, you're not too far off. Essentially hitting the Pacific Ocean with a Stone Cold Stunner, it’s driving up temperatures across the globe - leaving scientists in a huge debate about its immediate impact on temperatures across the atmosphere.
And speaking of heated, our oceans have been soaking in a warm bath for a couple of months now - as a result, Antarctic sea ice is at it’s lowest levels for June since observations began.
Who needs to go to Mars if we’re essentially turning the Earth into it amirite?
See ya tomorrow
